If you want a shelf queen revolver that is perdy to look at, get the S&W.
If you want a revolver that can handle hot loads, and will hold its accuracy through thousands of rounds, get the Ruger.
The frames are heavier, and they have three cylinder locks to keep the cylinder in line with the barrel. One in the front of the cylinder, one in the rear of the cylinder, and one at the bottom of the cylinder. They are tanks
Smith & Wesson had ups and downs over the years. Their best revolvers are better than any others, but they fell down a while when some Brit took over. Ruger is a good buy at a lower price.
S&W has the old reputation, but lately they have had problems. Ruger is cheaper and is a fine gun.
25 years ago- I would have said S&W, today- I’d get the Ruger.
Now what are you planing on buying a revolver for? Hunting, Concealed carry, Home Defense? Honestly, they both make a really nice revolver but I would probably side with with S&W either way you go.
While I like Ruger firearms for their rugged reliability I do not find them to be smooth of action (except for the Blackhawk model). Rugers tend to be heavies for similar sized frames and Rugers just are not as accurate as the Smith & Wesson when comparing double actions. I find the Colt Python to be the best in trigger and accuracy, but they more than the S&Ws.
Both are built like tanks. With proper maintenance your grandchildren will still have a fine gun. The best one would be the one that fits you the best.
You can’t go wrong with either one. They are both built to very high standards. S&W doesn’t make any western style revolvers like Ruger does so if that’s your preference Ruger is the one for you. I like S&W revolvers for the more classic revolver design that’s copied by many companies. Companies like Taurus and Rossi made S&W copies but are not made nearly as well. If you stick with S&W and Ruger you will own a great firearm which will out live you and that you can hand down to your kids and them their kids. Buy a Taurus and you’ll be using it as a hammer in 6 months.
It depends on what you’re looking for. A nice double-action Smith is hard to beat for a defensive handgun, but for hunting, I like the single-action Rugers, which also let me use some pretty stout loads.
