Is it a good time to buy a weapons system? What type should I get?
Since the economy is crumbling, I'm concerned about rising crime and protecting my home, my girlfriend and myself. I would like to purchase a 9mm handgun; what brand & model should I get? I don't have a lot of money, and I'm leaning towards a Glock 19, although they are a bit pricey.
What are some less expensive alternatives without sacrificing reliability?
Oh and I do not want this question to turn into a debate; I'm not interested.
Thanks!

Can’t go wrong with a Glock and the Model 19 is extremely utilitarian and user friendly. (Just keep your finger outta the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot and keep it in a holster that covers the trigger or store unloaded) how hard is that?
Consider also a Remington 870 pump shotgun in your choice of gauge. I like the 12 but a 20 may be more practical as it is easier on women’s shoulders (in the event that your girlfriend might have to use it).
Other practical choices are the Ruger series of revolvers like the GP-100 or the SP-101. If you still prefer a semi-auto then also look at the Rugers. The P-89 9mm (you can still find them new in the box for around $400) are an old war-horse. Reliable as can be, practically indestructible and only slightly less user friendly than the venerable Glock.
There are other makes of shotguns and handguns that are also good and practical but I’m only recommending those that I know are better than good! I carried a Ruger P-89 for about 5 years and it functioned flawlessly during that entire time (sometimes having by policy to qualify as many as three times a year). The last fifteen (or so years) of my LE career I carried a Glock Model 20 10mm and again it worked flawlessly during that time. I also own a Glock 31 in .357 Sig and a Glock 26 in 9mm. These too have been trouble free. The Remington 870 also served me well during shotgun qualifications as I was #1 in the class.
Good luck.

Go with a Glock if you have enough money, and buy a few extra boxes of ammo also. You also mite want to buy a cheap rifle or shotgun.
Home protection - Buy an AK47. Nobody breaks into a house when protected by these. I have one and even mentioing it has criminals running for the hills. They are $400-500 brand new and ammo is $4.99 for a box of 20 in 7.62.

Yup he’s dead!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t go wrong with a Glock 19.
They go for about 500$ in my area new and about 400-450 used depending on if they have night sights etc.
BTW 500$ for a hand gun is about average, remember you get what you pay for. I think Glock is one of the best guns for the money.
What ever you get do it before the elections, I was reading an article in one of my hunting magazines stating that gun sales are at the highest due to the uncertainty of the elections and the pending financial doom and yes I have done the same I am loaded to the gills. Try to look into a Springfield model 1911 about $400 as they are pretty sturdy kinda like the AK-47 of handguns. While your at it join a militia.. LOL
Home Protection: 12 Gauge Sawed Off Shot Gun,$150 at your local gun shop.
Get the Glock for personal protection with a permit to carry and get a little .32 or .380 for your girlfriend.
I myself believe that you can never be too safe so I got my Dad and Mom and Girlfriend all permits to carry handguns.
Keep in mind intruders will most likely strike at night so you want something you can point and shoot and know it won’t miss or misfire. Think about flashlight attachments as well if this is something you are going to have by your bed so you know what your shooting at.
If your going to go with the assault rifle suggestions, keep in mind when you go to court for killing the guy, his attorney will most likely make it look like you used to much fire power and you will be the one going to jail. You can’t go wrong with a pump shotgun.
If Obama is elected, expect a spike in the class of so called "Assault" weapons. People will be trying to buy now before the trio of Obama/Reid/Pelosi come up with a wave of new anti-gun legislation.
Weapons Systems???? Woe…..
Now that’s scary sounding……
As part of your weapons system you should also consider a shotgun….
Get this pistol…. Springfield Armory XD Pistol… I prefer 9MM — The ammo is cheap and even available in most Walmarts….

Then purchase a shotgun… A 12 gauge pump… The Mossberg 500 is perfect….

shotgun would be your ideal chouce.
1. Economics
you can purchase reliable shotguns for under $200. Glocks, Springfield XDs price over 500.00
2.Defence- your shotgun has the best chance of a 1 shot stopping power. The pistol however does not. Long arms are proven to be better than pistols. Pistols are only considered for the concealment factor.
3. Range, your long arm is more stable thus providing you more accurate fire power etc. Go to a gun range and rent a pistol to see what I mean.
Use bear spray and a whistle!
