Is a remington 700 cambered for 30-06 the gun for me? Boar, deer, elk, is this an all around good gun?
I live in Ohio where you cant hunt deer with a rifle,(This is fine with me by the way) but here is my situation. There is a lot of wild boar that I could hunt and we are planning to go caribu and mule deer hunting next year. I am a big beliver of the right gun for the right game but I don't need more than one large rifle since 99% of my hunting is done with shotguns and varmit rifles. I don't know a lot about large rifles but I was told that the Remington 700 in 30-06 will work game from boar to elk. Anyone agree or disagree? Anyone have a better suggestion?

Yes, The 30-06 is a fine cartridge. It will perform well on the game mentioned. Also being 30 caliber you get that vast bullet selection from exceleraters for varment up to 220 grain for big heavy game without having to reload and that is a huge plus. Another plus is that the 06 is so popular you can always find shells for it in any small town your hunts may lead you should you run short for some reason. As far as the Rem. 700 I believe it to be a great rifle for the money. I have owned them in several 30-06’s, 22-250’s,.270’s, also in the .300 wheatherby and the .22-.250 Rem. varment special. I shoot rifles alot the .300 I’m refering to and the 700 V. I still own and will never part with the .300 shoots just under a 1 inch 5 shot group at 100 yards and the only work ever done to it was by my gunsmith whom did an excellent trigger job for me. He says the trigger in them is comparable to a timny trigger. I have killed several Hogs, Blacktail deer, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Antelope, and of course the predeters. Coyotes and so on. I was fortunate enough to go to S. Africa to hunt plains game such as Kudu, Blessbuk, Impala,Mountain Reedbuk,Gemsbuk, and WartHog. African game even the plains game I mentioned is unbelievably tough. On this hunt I took the .300 and when I got there guess what my Pro Hunters were useing to back me incase something went wrong. A 30-06 in a 700. I could go on and on but I wont. EXCELLENT choice. It will out last you if takin care of !!
As I understand it, that’s the long-time standard for that size game. But I’m no expert with rifles.
Can’t say if the Rem 700 is right for you but the 30-06 chambering will get the job done nomatter what brand of rifle it is chambered in.
I have the Rem. 700 BDL-DM and I love it. Free floating barrel for those long shots with the all popular 30-06 caliber round. If I want to hunt smaller game such as hogs, I use full lead rounds and for larger game, I bought Winchester’s Fail Safe round. I agree, it’s one of the best all around guns.
, Ya i live in Oklahoma and last year i killed 2 of my white tail deer with a Remington 30-06 and it might of been a bit of an over kill, while i didn’t damage any of the meat i did completely destroy the chest cavity, but for a elk or boar it should be about the right size, i would like to talk about you hunting the boar tho, i have hunted them a bit and a 30-06 will kill the pig just make shure you don’t miss, it could get pritty messy if you tick one off and only have a bolt action rifle,
30-06 is perfect for the applications you just mentioned. I live in W.Va. and for the most part, the farms I hunt on, the 30-06 is a little too much. The 30-06 will give you the range and "knock-down" power to tackle an elk, so I’m sure a boar will be no problem. Just be careful to know what’s beyond your target. As I said earlier, the 30-06 is too much gun for my applications, but you don’t need much to drop a whitetail. The 30-06 round will easily pass through a target and keep travelling if you’re close enough. So, be careful about that.

The Remington 700 belongs in every serious gun case, and the .30-’06 belongs in every serious gun case, and if possible, the 2 together.
GET IT!!! you will have one of the top 5 finest rifles ever made.
Get a scope and iron sights if possible, because if you’re hunting boar up close and personal, you really dont want a scope. Irons are the only way to go there.
Mule deer are no problem, but don’t do anything stupid with elk. Elk are hard to kill, the ‘06 can do it with NO PROBLEMS if you do everything right.
I have four 700’s, more than any other model, and wouldn’t hesitate to get another. Sounds perfect.
Yes the 30-06 will be just fine for the game you mentioned.It will take any of these animals without a problem.

Congratulations. You’ve purchased a very nice rifle that will take any big game in North America. The Remington 700 is excellent. It is strong and accurate. Match a good scope to it and tailor your loads to the game you’re hunting. Lighter bullets for deer, heavier ones for Elk and Caribou, and heaviest ones for the big, 400+ lb. boars and bear.
